What Our Clients Say
Making Tax Digital FAQs
When do I need to comply with Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA) will be mandatory:
• From 6 April 2026 for individuals with gross self-employment and/or property income over £50,000 per year
• From 6 April 2027 for individuals with gross self-employment and/or property income over £30,000 per year
The income threshold is based on the total qualifying income reported on your most recent Self Assessment tax return, before expenses are deducted.
Does MTD for ITSA apply to me?
MTD for Income Tax applies to sole traders and landlords whose total gross income from self-employment and/or property exceeds the relevant threshold.
This includes:
-
Individuals with one or more self-employed businesses
-
Individuals with UK and/or overseas rental property income
The threshold is based on the total qualifying income shown on your most recent Self Assessment tax return, before expenses are deducted.
If you have a mix of self-employment and property income, these are added together when assessing whether MTD for ITSA applies.
Do I still need to file a self assessment tax return?
No — under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, you won’t file a traditional Self Assessment tax return.
Instead, you’ll submit:
-
Quarterly updates during the tax year, and
-
An annual final declaration, which confirms your income, claims any reliefs, and finalises your tax position for the year.
We’ll handle the submissions and ensure everything is completed correctly and on time.
Will I have to pay tax quarterly under MTD for ITSA?
No. Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes how often information is reported, not when tax is paid.
You’ll submit quarterly updates to HMRC, but these are for reporting purposes only. Your tax will still be calculated after you submit your annual final declaration, and payment deadlines remain the same as under the current Self Assessment system.
HMRC may introduce changes to payment timings in the future, but no changes have been confirmed at this stage.
What software do you recommend for MTD for ITSA?
We work with a range of MTD-compatible accounting software, including Xero, Sage, QuickBooks and FreeAgent.
The right software depends on your business type, level of complexity, and how involved you want to be with your bookkeeping. We’ll help you choose and set up the option that best fits your needs.
If you’re not currently using accounting software, we can recommend a simple solution and handle the setup for you.
I’m under the threshold—should I prepare for MTD for ITSA?
Yes. Even if you’re currently below the income threshold, building good digital record-keeping habits now will make future compliance much easier.
Using MTD-compatible software early can also help improve accuracy, save time, and reduce stress if and when you are brought into MTD for Income Tax.
We can help you get set up with simple software and support you at a pace that suits you.
